THE RULES FOR MAKING PERFECT COFFEE AT HOME EVERY TIME.

Know your mocha from your macchiato? With coffee the most popular drink in the world behind water, chances are you’ve dabbled with the brown nectar of the gods and brewed your own at least once. If you want to discover just how good it can be, follow these pro tips for coffee perfection at home.

1. USE QUALITY BEANS

As with so much food and drink, you get out what you put in. Choosing quality beans, ethically sourced from smaller, independent producers will typically get you the best results.

2. RESIST THE ROBUSTA

Essentially there are two groups of coffee varieties: Arabica and Robusta. Robusta packs an over-the-top caffeine punch and a taste of burnt rubber in the cup. Avoid it in favor of the more diverse and balanced Arabica varieties that are also gentler on your heart rate.

3. OPT FOR MEDIUM TO LIGHT ROASTS

Time was when an Italian- or French-style dark roast dominated the coffee scene. These days, we’re more careful to preserve the bean’s delicate and complex flavors, which are best revealed in lighter or medium roasts.

4. BUY SPECIALTY COFFEE

You don’t need to be an expert on coffee beans, just look out for ‘specialty’ or the specific Quality Score for each coffee. Coffee that scores at least 80 out of 100 is classed as specialty, which works out at around the top 10% of all coffee produced, so you know you’re buying quality. Note that Gourmet’ has no defined meaning; so don’t pay it much attention.
